Research on physical culture and sports

The results of the first comprehensive study in Ukrainе, titled "The level of involvement of children and youth in motor and physical activity and the impact of sport on physical and mental health," were released.

Research on physical culture and sports

The research was undertaken by the NDC "Institute of Family and Youth Policy" with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, the All-Ukrainian Center for Physical Health "Sport for All" and the Kateryna Biloruska Foundation.

The survey was executed across 8 regions of Ukraine: Kyiv, Rivne, Odesa, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Poltava, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zhytomyr regions, and the city of Kyiv. This approach ensured the involvement of a representative number of participants. It garnered valuable insights from sports experts, medical professionals, researchers, and parents concerning the degree of participation of children and youth in physical activities. It also examined the influence of sports on children and adolescents' physical and mental well-being.

The statistics for the last 5 years were particularly surprising. After all, this period encompassed the COVID-19 pandemic, remote learning, and the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine. All these factors impacted the level of physical activity among children and youth.

Until now, no up-to-date and comprehensive statistics on children's involvement in physical activity have been available. This study marks the initial endeavor to collect such metrics. Here are a few of the primary findings:

- 7.6% of respondents lack the necessary conditions for sports and physical activities;
- 46% of children have not attended physical education classes since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Before the war, this figure was 15%.
- Only 22.6% of respondents indicated the absence of constraints on physical education and sports within their localities.

These statistics represent a portion of the insights we have acquired. A more detailed analysis can be found below.

The importance of physical activity and sports in the lives of children and youth is immeasurable, particularly within the context of current challenges and restrictions. Quarantine measures and a full-scale war have fundamentally transformed society and its habits and priorities. Therefore, it is more important than ever to talk about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity as a component of children's and youth's physical and mental well-being.

The study results were presented at a roundtable dedicated to reviewing and discussing a relevant and significant aspect of modern life - children and youth's physical and mental health. This platform fostered discussions about initiatives to improve the well-being of the younger generation and identify strategies to promote physical activity and sports among children and youth in Ukraine.
